What Is
Academic Pentathlon?
Academic Pentathlon is your chance to compete against students from other schools in academics just as you do in athletics. The Academic Pentathlon is an exciting one-day, five-event academic competition for 7th and 8th grade students.

Each spring, students from middle schools all over Texas go head-to-head in regional tournaments. In our region that means going up against students from over 20 schools! After weeks of academic coaching, team study, and individual preparation, Pentathletes gather on competition day to test their knowledge in Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Super Quiz.

The competition is held in classrooms for four of the events. These are written question or essay events. Super Quiz is a public event where students answer questions about a specific topic of study in a quiz show style format. Super Quiz is held in an auditorium or gymnasium so family and friends can come and cheer on team members.

An Academic Pentathlon team consists of nine students from the same grade level. Each team has three Honor (3.75+ GPA), three Scholastic (3.00 - 3.74 GPA), and three Varsity students (below 3.00 GPA). Team members compete against other students from the same division for both individual medals and team medals and trophies.

Garcia Middle School has one seventh grade team and one eighth grade team. To calculate your GPA (Grade Point Average), use your previous year’s first & second semester grades and these values: A = 4; B = 3; C = 3; D = 2; F = 0.

We want you on the team! Just e-mail us to sign up today or see Mr. Simmons or Mr. Wilson in the seventh grade area.
